Feeder Cattle Weighted Average Report for 03/19/2019

Receipts: 2,631 Last Week: 2,753 Year Ago: 2,017

Compared to last week: Feeder steers 500-649 lbs sold mostly
steady to 5.00 higher, 650-699 lbs sold steady to weak, 700-799 lbs
steers sold firm. Heifers 500-699 lbs sold steady to 5.00 lower.
Quality differences made comparisons difficult this week as quality
was mixed. A heavy offering of replacement heifers were seen today
as this was the annual Trailhead replacement heifer show and sale.
Good demand was seen for attractive quality replacement cattle.
Heavy weight heifer quality was mostly attractive and the stands
were full of buyers looking for replacements. Late in the afternoon
feeding buyers purchased some of the high quality heifers to feed.
This pulled heavy weight heifer prices near steady with last week.
Feeding demand from the corn-belt has been light as they continue to
deal with flooding and muddy lot conditions. CME positions saw sharply
positive movement today as triple digit gains were seen from the
April contract through January of 2020. Market activity this week
was mostly moderate to active. Weigh up cows sold on light to
moderate demand for light offerings. Demand from feeding cow buyers
was lighter this week. Quality this week was mostly plain to average,
and lower than last week. Slaughter cows sold mostly 1.00-3.00 lower
on lean cows all other classes were too lightly tested to develop
any market trend. Feeding cows were too lightly tested to trend as
well however lower undertones were noticed. Slaughter bulls were
scarcely tested this week, thus no trend is available. The feeder
cattle offering was 29 percent steers and bulls, 71 percent heifers
with 57 percent weighing over 600 lbs. Todays supply consisted of
86 percent feeder cattle, 3 percent slaughter cows, near 0 slaughter
bulls, 6 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning to the
country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs. Next sale will
be Tuesday March 26th, 2019.
